CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Evie swooned against him, too shocked by the sudden turn of events and too stunned by her body’s instant reaction to him to do anything other than give herself over fully to the sensory onslaught he subjected her to. To begin with it was exactly what she suspected it was meant to be. A warning shot over the bow. Prod me and I will lash out. But then the intensity of the kiss changed almost as quickly as it had begun. His lips gentled, his breathing became shallower and the firm grip he had on her waist eased. Instead of using the kiss to bend her to his will, Finn began to explore her mouth with his own while his hands went on a whole other journey of exploration up her ribcage, then down her back before coming to rest possessively on her bottom.

Evie could not help kissing him back or looping her arms around him to anchor him in place. Being kissed by Finn was so marvellous, unexplainable. Necessary. Her own fingers toyed with his hair, smoothed across his broad shoulders, enjoyed the shape and texture of the muscles beneath his skin. All the while Evie was supremely conscious of the effect it was having on her own body. Tiny ripples of desire spread hotly through her limbs like fiery tendrils, making her arms and legs feel heavy even as her head became light and dizzy.

When the tip of his tongue touched the tip of hers, Evie moaned against his mouth. Far from repulsing him, the animalistic noise merely spurred him on. His mouth and hands became bolder, the open-mouthed kiss more intimate than anything Evie had ever dared imagine, yet completely welcome. Her body wanted more.

So much more.

Unfamiliar nerve endings hummed with need and, as if he knew where she ached, he used his body to soothe them. His hips pressed scandalously against hers until she felt the hot, insistent press of the evidence of his own desire through their clothes. Except that didn’t soothe; it made her body’s cravings worse.

Evie’s inquisitive hands moved to his chest of their own accord. Explored. Drifted lower. His hands lazily edged further and further up her body until they found her breasts. He moaned his own appreciation as his hands were filled with the aching mounds, until his thumbs found her taut nipples beneath the thin muslin of her new gown, and then it was Evie who was moaning and writhing against him, desperate for more.

When he suddenly stepped away, holding her at arm’s length, it took several moments for her brain to function normally again. When it did she was almost panting and completely stunned. A reaction Finn shared as he blinked back at her, his own breaths coming in ragged, staccato bursts.

‘I’m sorry.’ Evie had never heard his voice sound so strained. ‘Please forgive me, Evie.’ He let go of her then and ran one hand through his dark hair in agitation. ‘I never meant to...’

His voice trailed off as he stared at the floor, his expression now more of mortification than desire.
